Southam 2nd's - Away - Match Report!

Here we go boys..."Ming's" interpretation. I don't think it's going to be pretty reading! Damo.

Report - still no paragraphs though!
Southam 2nd’s v Market Bosworth 3rd’s 24 – 23 So we weren’t playing at Hinckley, we were playing at Southam … away – just past the nice pub by the canal. It was hot, and we were playing in blue, much to the referee’s obvious excitement. We were also playing on the middle pitch, although Damo realised pretty quickly and didn’t need to be told 14 times. 14 – that’s a strange number for a rugby team – yes normally a team consists of 15 men – but not this week – Damo thought he’d put us through our paces before Coalville and only allowing 14 to travel – not sure he’d taken account of the long grass and the heat we’d have to contend with in addition to a lack of a body! So Damo won the toss off in the centre again and opted to kick off and change ends – not sure you can choose two things – but he did! Straight from the kick off their back row and centres combined to put about 30m yardage on the board but some quick thinking in the tackle area and we had the ball for the first time, but (unknown at this moment in time but it would be the story of the game) some good passing out the tackle then sloppy forced passes or shovelling sh*t meant all the gains we made were lost. Some sustained territory saw a couple of decent line breaks from Massey and the ball coming wide, but not wide enough to get us across the whitewash but we were awarded a penalty, from our still enthusiastic referee, which meant Mr Socks & Sandals had the chance for 3 points, good nudge and we were up. Almost straight from the off a poor restart, due to an inability to remember our names when the ball came our way, put us under pressure and only some stern tackles from us on their most dangerous players (No’s 10 & 12) kept them from scoring. The game hovered around the centre of the park going backwards and forwards until a chip over the top from the Southam 10 was gathered by Howard, who touched down and saw a gap at the other end of the field and set off like a man possessed (perhaps he was – nobody really knows what happens when he puts that hat on …) and went for a quick 22 drop out, which was badly squew wiffed to the left and their fullback, but some chasing from the three quarters caught him, turned him over and Howard had the chance to draw his man and set The Doc free – “go on Granddad” came the cry from the totty on the sideline – and sure he did, rolling back the years to score in the corner for his first for the season, a difficult touchline conversion wasn’t obtained from Jesus Sandals. More sustained pressure from the forwards had us camped in their 22 and a couple of good drives later and our other “granddad” had scored – surely – no … why ref? in dullest tone possible “I saw two movements and perhaps a knock on” This was the one time Mr Payne hadn’t knocked it on pointed out Mr Bowen in true Brin style. Bosworth not amused, but Mr Enthusiastic wasn’t having any of it. No try, scrum five. A good nudge from the front 7 and we put their 9 under, who shipped to 10 and he decided he’d go on a wander out the dead ball area – not so according to Mr “This is my show” Enthusiastic and play went on with the 10 then nudging almost the length of the park, only for Massey to deny the chase with a hand into touch, penalty for not using the boot. Quick ball wide after some good tackling from the forwards and even though mad man in the hat was screaming for support out wide it was too late and they were over, although another failed conversion and we were still up. All to change when a penalty was given against the backs for asking if they were 5 behind, told yes, then being pinged for not being 5. Mr Enthusiastic really wasn’t warming to us was he? It was taken quickly by their 9 who sent their 12 through the heart of the midfield and under the posts, with an easy conversion to boot. Half time then, and there was plenty to chew over, some harsh words were said by the skipper and quite simply we weren’t playing our rugby, we were panicing, forcing passes and we weren’t really blowing enough. Time for some Bosy rugby. Straight from the off the forwards set off on a rampaging run bang down the middle, Bowen, Cutler, Prior, “Mhister Thom” (did you know he had a date that night - the ironing lady!) all made hard yards, out to the backs who had a few more yards to make. Southam over the top and a penalty, Burton, quick pass to Massey who ran from the 22 to the try line un-touched to cross the whitewash, Sandals made it 7. Not sure how long went before our next try but I know it involved quick ball wide from Burton to Cutler to Howard and then to Philipino loving Mr Tom on the wing, who didn’t quite have the legs to get to the line but set it up well for Sandals to pick it up from the ruck and fall over the line and added is own conversion for the 7 points. No more points were added to the tally. In fact I can’t remember how they scored their third – but I know it came in the right corner and was after a 3 pointer under the sticks for them. Some last ditch attacking from Bosy came and went, not sure how it came about but Bowen did see the red mist and was attempting to flatten one of their lads, and Mr Cutler was called a “greedy bas*ard” by Massey when the line was gaping with 3 outside him. Oh and I nearly forgot, Tom, our new 15 was chundering behind the dead ball line – he’d not done circuits in a while had he? So it wasn’t to be, from a wingers point of view, trying to look at it from a forwards perspective, not a great day at the office from 1 - 14, but some good play in patches, just couldn’t be followed up with sustained tackling, or good enough handling and running lines to finish them off, some gilt edged missed opportunities. The scrums started very well, especially against the head, and something we should build on for the league campaign as this is 3 weeks now I’ve seen you boys push the opposition off the ball with ease. The lineouts were always going to be tricky with no established 2 but it seemed we could make our pressure count when it really mattered. The rucking and mauling never really got going as there was a lot of balls being used to quickly or shipped on too fast to get any momentum going. If we can get you guys holding on the ball and taking it for walk, tiring their forwards out, it will leave the space out wide for the backs to have a run. I can’t see many teams being able to live with the size and power of the 8 when in full steam – and I’d like to think the backs have the experience to finish things off when given the chances. To conclude: it was always going to be difficult for 14 against 15 (possibly 16 with Happy go Lucky blowing his whistle all day) but we could and should have had them. Harder tackling, harder running, passing when we should have done, holding on when we should have done and we’d have strolled it, but not so. So onwards and upwards to the league campaign and an opening fixture (at home – can you remember what it’s like in Bosworth?) to Coalville – our nemesis from last season. This is our time boys, let’s make sure we take it. Highlight of the Day: Playing in Blue – just to piss the ref off. Lowlight of the Day: Seeing that Jase had been peppered with lead pellets in the back of his t-shirt. Harsh.

Numbers
It is always hard playing with less players on the pitch. I think this is a lesson we need to take on board. Now we have been there and done it we can not let it happen again. I am not just talking about the need to recruit. I would really welcome more players even in the same possition as me because competition brings out the best in ever one. The other issue that came out on saturday was when things don't always go our way we start to question the referee... in most cases this is justly called for. But if a ref makes a bad disission we need to accept it rather than question him because sooner or later we will get a yellow card. We have all played with fourteen men lets not let it happen again for what ever reason

Well said Damo i agree more than most more players better competition brings out the best. I think the route cause on saturday was the fact that we did not have players in key specialist positions. We missed Ian at Hooker,I dont mind palying there to fill in but good accurate throwning takes years to master as Ian and Michael will tell you. I will miss next weeks games as i am gettin drunk in Menorca, however i am looking forward to reading the match report. I have just checked and the referee is Lance Sullen who has refereed to a reasonable level so we have to be on our game. Damo has put us through a couple of tough tests recently with playing South 2nds & then playing with 14 men which i am sure help all of our fitness issues. See you all in a month

Next Month!
Castro (Mr Thom), next month! You mean next week don't you. Away to Hinckley! - Neil your our Mr Utility and be proud! Just spoken to Fludey. Says he is going training tonight. Lets get him as a replacement for Tom on Sat if we can. Surely he can't go striaght into the 2nds after returning from injury. Thats the talk I've heard. He'll need match fitness! However, he says he is unsure whether he will be able to lift. - Great write up Ming. However, it was our captain setting the example with the red mist. He was looking after me. I need it you see. See you all saturday. C'mon Damo's lovely boys.

Red Mist
What's this i read about Tref Bowen and red mist?? Glad to see it's not just me who's see's red and wants to chew razor blades on the pitch. I hope to be ready for action before the end of the season after my operation on shoulder has healed...looking forward to competing for a place and releiving Damo of the strain of considering Burton on the back-row!! Is Jase and Lace still alive as i don't see the abuse anymore?

Lacey has taken up shopping on a saturday he will learn soon enough not to retire to early. Jase is still playing in second row but soon to start moving forward in to the front row as age is catching up on him

Abuse
Perce cause im still playing unlike Lace who is rumoured to have taken up mountain climbing on a Saturday now !!! As for moving up into the front row Mr Thom, I would much rather have my arm around Tref for most the game than you !! I would probably be leaving the pitch naked with your obsession for my clothing that seems to have recently developed. Glad to hear you had a good time with your Phillapino Lass have a good time on holiday and look forward to seeing you back as a PROP on your return. Great write up Ming ! Lads we will never change a refs decision by moaning at him we will just get him on our backs, also I feel the forwards are trying to ship the ball way too early and not drawing their loose forwards into the breakdown which made us run around like headless chickens for a lot of the match. If we secure the ball we have all the time in the world !

Jase is right, as always
I agree with Jase. The backs want quick ball when the opposition back row is busy. Not slow ball when the opposition are all lined up shouting 'feet feet press'. I also agree that Ming's write-up was very good - though he could have spent a bit more time describing my try.

Ming for team PO!
We have a captain, we have a kit manager (Iain) we even have a joker (Mr Thom) and a logistics manager (Moley...alway good for finding grounds!) and a social manager, Jase. All we need now is a press officer. Vote MING! Anyone secound that? If so, motion passed.
